Shanghai has launched an online self-help system for overseas personnel to register residence, which brings great convenience.
For all foreigners to visit or live in China, one of the most important legal requirements to follow is to register a temporary residence.
Apart from those who live in hotels, people had to go to a police station to register their temporary residence.
Now foreigners arriving in Shanghai can do this online instead of going to the police in person owing to the launch of the Self-Help Declaration System for Overseas Personnel’s Accommodation Registration.
According to official estimates, this system could benefit about 500,000 people per year.
If you don’t want to walk to the police station, wait in line and take time to fill out a form, the new system might be the best choice.

Log in the declaration system
Type your mail address, password, and security code to sign in and log on to the system.
If you haven’t signed up before, it’ll take a few seconds to get an account.

Fill the declaration form
Select the document type and follow the instructions to fill the information.
You need to upload a picture of your passport page with personal info and photo, then fill in your address in Shanghai and the proposed date of stay and departure.
It is quite convenient that the system will automatically recognize your information once you upload ID information page of the passport.
After the submission of the declaration, you’ll receive a confirmation message. You can view the results in “History” and download the registration form.
Such convenient measures help foreigners attending the second China International Import Expo.
Shanghai is the first city in China to introduce online residence registration, and it’s the only city providing the system so far.
If you’re not going to live in Shanghai, well, there’s another convenient method for you to register residence.
Foreigners in cities including Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Xi’an and Nanjing can register through the WeChat app in addition to at the nearest police station.
Take Shenzhen as an example.

Follow the official account
Follow the official WeChat account of Shenzhen Bureau of Public Security (WeChat ID: szga-110).

Enter the registration system
Click “民生” > “出入境” > “境外人员临时住宿登记”

Follow the instruction and type your information, then submit.
As one of the proofs that proving foreigner’s legal residence in China, the Registration Form, together with your Identity Document, is for the local police to confirm your identity and residence in China.
You’ll definitely be required to provide this document when you apply for a China work visa or a third country’s visa, or buy a house or car etc in China.
